The enormous trees in the Karen Mogensen Reserve stand over the crown of the peninsula’s watershed, holding the land intact with their root system, sequestering approximately 8000 tonnes of CO2 per year from the atmosphere (according to IPCC 2019 methodology). The reserve is the source of the rivers that tumble down to the ocean on all sides of the peninsula, providing pure water to five small communities. The long-term protection of the watershed by the Karen Mogensen Nature Reserve is a critical pillar for the region.
Nevertheless, while the forest inside the Karen Mogensen Reserve is protected, there still remain many threats for the wildlife and ecosystems outside of the Nature Reserve on the Nicoya Peninsula.
Every year a large area of private land is deforested for different reasons:
Clearing private land for development
(Illegal) logging for supply in the timber market
Clearing forest for mono-crop teak farms (an exotic species)
Clearing forest for cattle farming
