Karen Mogensen Reserve
Wildlife Refuge
CERRO ESCONDIDO LODGE
Visitors are welcome to come and experience the exceptional biodiversity of the Karen Mogensen Reserve. Your visit helps support wildlife conservation, environmental research, educational campaigns in Costa Rica, and helps us maintain the protection services of the Reserve.
All visits must be booked in advance. You will be accompanied by one of our experienced guides to hike through the forest on foot to reach the lodge. Cabins, flushing toilets, showers, and meals are provided.
The reserve offers 22 km of well-maintained hiking trails, which include the famous Velo de la Novia Cascada (Bride's Veil Waterfall), Tres Rios (Three Rivers), and the lookout tower.
MEALS
Included in the lodge rates are breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meals are filling and made with typical Costa Rican foods and local ingredients. There is an on-site cook who prepares all the meals. Due to the remote location of the eco-lodge, there are no other food options available on location, so bring some snacks if needed.
Note: depending on what time you arrive and leave, you may want to have your lunch on the day you come in or on the day you leave, or both. You can coordinate this through your reservation
Please let us know any dietary restrictions, requirements or allergies far in advance.RESERVATIONS
Booking your stay with us is currently done through our parent organization site, ASEPALECO. Please visit our booking site below. A new window will pop up for you. When you are done booking, don't forget to revisit this page to find out what to bring on your trip. We look forward to hosting you!

What to Bring
IMPORTANT:
Do not carry anything you do not need, since you will have to carry your pack up the hill for about an hour to the lodge
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Flashlight (VERY IMPORTANT)
Shoes: prepare for many river crossings, where your shoes will get wet. Water shoes or good sandals with grip are needed.
For the other trails, you may want to bring a pair of hiking or sport shoes, or just put your wet shoes on again if you don’t mind. Once you are in the lodge, further hikes will not go through rivers, so you can keep your shoes pretty much dry, unless it rains
Small backpack
Snacks
Water bottle
Bug spray
Raincoat (in rainy season)
Light sweater or long-sleeved shirt. It can get a bit chilly at night at certain times of the year
Toiletries (preferably biodegradable)
Change of light, comfortable clothes and socks (clothing will get wet/dirty)
Sarong or light towel for river swimming during hikes
Swim Suit
Any needed medicine, bandaids etc.
Optional
Camera, Binoculars
Walking sticks. They can be helpful since the terrain is uneven and we will go over slippery rocks through rivers.
Sunscreen (optional, walks are mostly in the shade)
